White House / Washington, D.C. [Hand-painted glass photograph]

By [The White House - Early Photography]
Washington, DC, 1870. Very Good. Washington, DC: ca. 1870s. Original oval glass photograph of the White House (ca. 14.5x19.5cm) rather crudely affixed to card mount. Mount toned, else an excellent example.

Early glass photograph of the White House, the verso painted with broad strokes and glued mica to give the impression of a blue sky, a green and purple lawn, and water spraying from the fountain out front. The mica shows through on the pillars, flecking them with pearly gold, while the window arches have been hand-painted with gilt. An unusual and somewhat childish example, though the effect is striking. Accompanied by a piece of cardboard on which a previous owner or dealer has written "The White House reverse painting on glass." To which another owner or dealer has corrected, "Actually an early photograph on glass, then colored by paint and mica, c. 1875.
