This novel, the author's first, is set in the suburbs of Baltimore and concerns the following characters: "a five-year-old genius who has learned all he knows from watching television; Cathy, aged twelve, his sister and devoted accomplice in a plot she doesn't understand; Jessie, a girl who plays games that might astonish Eric Berne, M.D.; Jay, a handsome young motorcyclist from Darien, Connecticut, who believes he has found a mission in life; Ethel Price, a housewife who hates her husband and is ambivalent about her infant son; and an anonymous madman who, keeping one jump ahead of the law, broadcasts his distorted view of the world from a clandestine radio station concealed in a 1951 Ford coupe." .
