This book was one of the most popular Catholic histories of the 17th century. Published posthumously. Authored by the Jesuit scholar Orazio Torsellino, most famous for his biography of Francis Xavier, founder of the Society of Jesus. His work was ordered to be burned along with many other Jesuit works by the French Parliament in 1762. This edict and other rulings of Jesuit condemnation like it persecuting, censoring, and martyring of Jesuits due to the view that their theology was against natural law, branding them heretics, continued into the 19th century.
