- Ephemera
Ephemera. Very Good. Original photograph of chess master (and 4-time New York State Champion) Eugene Delmar, circa 1896, at the tournament at Lake Skaneateles, NY. Considered one of the strongest players in the country, Delmar is here posing with his daughter, Belle Emily, having been accorded the high honor of a seat at the chess table (as white no less). The photograph, by "Hammond", is clean and sharp (with inconspicuous soiling at the rear) and measures 9 3/4" wide x 6 3/4" tall. Also includes a wonderful chess broadside, an 1870 declaration of the need to establish a "Grand International Chess Congress", to be designed for New York in 1871. Eugene Delmar figures prominently in the broadside as well, as a member of the Committee recommending the International Congress. The single sheet, published in Brooklyn in 1870, measures 5" wide x 8" tall and shows light, even creasing and several tiny chips along the edges. A nice example of late 19th cntury chess ephemera.
