Stockholm: Moderna Museet, 1969. Decorative Wrappers. Near Fine/Near Fine. The May 1969 signed/limited edition of Andy Warhol's very important first European solo exhibition, at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and limited to only 100 copies signed by Andy Warhol. Legend has it that Warhol was back in Stockholm in early 1969, following the success of the February-March 1968 exhibition, and it was decided the museum would take advantage of his presence by issuing a very scarce 2nd edition, this time signed by Warhol. Given the clear scarcity of the May 1969 2nd edition --the signed/limited edition-- one wonders if there actually were 100 of these issued. We've heard whisperings that the real number was much closer to 30-40 copies. At any rate, this is a lovely copy. Clean and Near Fine in its iconic colorful (almost psychedelic) flower-motif wrappers. All edges gilt (another issue point to the correct signed/limited edition) and BOLDLY SIGNED BY WARHOL at the title page under his printed name. The black-and-white photographs were taken by fixtures at The Factory such as Rudy Burkhardt, Bllly Name, Stepen Shore, etc. This copy includes a crisp, very clean glassine dustjacket. We cannot determine if this is the Museum's dustjacket (therefore constituting a genuine dustjacket to the signed/limited edition) or if this was supplied at a later time by a former owner of this copy. Our suspicion is that it's a genuine dustjacket issued at publication but we cannot demonstrate this. Finally, this copy --bright and clean and very sharp-- lacks the publisher's dark acrylic slipcase.
