First edition of this collection of four essays by Genet, written as an appeal to defend Black Panther Party Chairman Bobby Seale, who was facing murder charges in New Haven. Genet entered the U.S. clandestinely in March of 1970, and spent the next two months traveling the country, speaking on behalf of Seale and the Black Panther Party in major cities and on numerous college campuses. The title essay was based on a talk given on March 18, 1970, at the Albert Jorgensen Auditorium at the University of Connecticut. It first appeared in the March 28, 1970 issue of The Black Panther, under the title "Bobby Seale, the Black Panthers and Us, White People" (Vol.4, No.17); it was reprinted in The Black Panther, with extensive modifications, in the May 31, 1970 issue under the title "Here and Now for Bobby Seale." Genet modified the text still further, with this translation by Judy Oringer appearing in the June, 1970 issue of Ramparts. The text of the March 28, 1970 issue, along with the Ramparts version, are included here, along with two other essays: "I Must Begin with an Explanation of My Presense in the United States," and "The Black Panthers Are Preparing the Revolution with Precipitous Care. The Revolution Will Come: Time Is At Their Service." OCLC notes 14 holdings. cf.Genet's The Declared Enemy: Texts and Interviews, pp.297-299. 84103.
