A Pair of Brochures Relating to Locust Cottage, A Small "Gentile Only" Resort in the Catskill Mountains
- Prattsville, NY: Locust Cottage, 1920
Prattsville, NY: Locust Cottage, 1920. General wear.. Two unfolded brochures for Locust Cottage under the proprietor J. B. Merwin. The cottage was a small resort located in Prattsville, NY within the Catskill Mountains that was for "Gentiles Only". The two brochures describe an idyllic setting with "beautiful mountain scenery, romantic drives and pure mountain air" with "large grounds for tennis, croquet, swings and dancing," as well as "telephone connects, [and] garage". Only one of the brochures specifically note "Gentiles Only", as well as "no consumptives". Between the two brochures there are five (5) black and white printed photographs (of which one is a duplicate), that depict the cottage and local scenery. As for dating, it appears, based on the earliest newspaper ads found, that Locust Cottage was established in or around 1906, and since according to one of the brochures this was for the 14th season, which would put that item around 1920. Newspaper ads also note that around 1915, the cottage underwent some renovations, bring the total amount of guests it was able to accommodate from 25 to 35 people and a garage was added, so the remaining brochure cannot be from prior to that. Additionally, the two brochures are most likely from different seasons, since the rates alter between the two. Both brochures are unfolded: one was supposed to fold into a tri-fold brochure, with the only supposed to be a single fold brochure. Single page, double sided (both). Measures 12" x 17 (unfolded) and 10 1/2" x 8" (unfolded).
