New York: Nelson & Phillips, 1876. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. 8vo.; in brown flexible cloth boards titled in gold to the upper board; 87 pages; rebacked with new brown japanese tissue.~~This copy with the signature of J. S. Hutchinson, dated November 5th, 1874, and a later gift inscription to “Collins Denny, 1895.” Collins Denny was a Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church South. His son, Collins Denny, Jr. added a note (in part erroneous): “J. S. Hutchinson was one of my father’s dearest friends. He was a member of the 5th Virginia Stonewall Brigade”. In fact, while Hutchinson served under Stonewall it was not in Stonewall Brigade, but rather in the 10th Virginia. He was wounded at the First Battle of Winchester, and then captured at the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania.~~There is also a prior insciption from Thomas M. Finney to Sam Rodgers, dated Atlanta, Ga. May 1878. This is undoubtedly the Thomas Finney who penned “The Life and Labors of Enoch Mather Marvin, Late Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South”. ~~An uncommon piece of Methodist history, with intriguing provenance. Very Good binding.
