New York: Eaton and Mains, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. VERY SCARCE IN EARLY EDITION. Written in 1896, Maxwell presents the adventures of three women - Belinda Mays, Rose Tyler, and Judith Melrose - who were considered old maids in that era, although Rose was 23 and Judith was less than 30. However, they had "old-maidish" characteristics, such as a hostility toward men and matrimony (Rose). This is romantic novel in which the 3 old maids visit many places in Hawaii and have numerous adventures, including the culmination in a wedding!. An enjoyable tale with good local observations. Includes 10 full-page illustrations. Octavo. In original green cloth-covered boards, with spine faded to brown. Title in gilt to front cover and spine. Minor scuffing at edges of boards. Pages are slightly yellowed but clean and bright. 394 pages. LIT/051625.
