Paris: Henri Agasse / Librairie DuPont, [1800]. First Edition. 12mo. Printed wrappers; half-title and title page, 29pp. Removed, with remnants of binding adhesive at bound edge, faintly foxed; Very Good. Ownership signature of [C.W.?] Hutchinson, Utica, NY, to half-title.
This funeral oration by the Marquis de Fontanes, member of the French Academy, was written at the direct behest of Napoleon and delivered at the Washington memorial commemoration in January, 1820, about a month after Washington's death. An English-language translation with historical notes is included in Hough’'s Washingtoniana (1865). The first initial of the ownership signature is difficult to make out but appears to be C.W., possibily Charles W. Hutchinson (1826-1896), a prominent Utica merchant, collector, and bibliophile. SABIN 101800.
