Chironomia; or, A Treatise on Rhetorical Delivery

  • Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1966
By AUSTIN, Gilbert
Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1966. First Thus. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's bright red cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. [xxix]; 583pp.; [1]; +[15]pp. Index to rear. Clean and bright with some very minor wear to corners and spine ends; internally cleam, light spotting to page edges; in a clean, bright dustjacket with some light toning and discoloration and a couple of closed tears. A very good, solid copy in dustjacket.

Essentially a very professionally edited and introduced facsimile of the 1806 London edition; one of the more in depth and committed attempts on the part of Gilbert Austin to revolutionize the calibre and technique of British rhetoric and debate technique. Austin observed that a major part of contemporary rhetorical technique was voice control, and set out to incorporate additional factors like posture and breathing into his treatise.
