Brown, the son of James Brown – the founder of Little, Brown & Company, enrolled in Harvard in July 1859. He was named after his father's friend and fellow publisher John Murray of London. The scrapbook includes his enrollment papers, numerous recitations and examinations, and commencement programs. Also included are several supper club menus, a program for an 1860 regatta that featured Harvard and Yale boats, newspaper clippings related to an 1860 hazing incident between the Harvard sophmores and freshman (Brown seems to have been involved as there is a related letter to his father).
