Perhaps the most beautifully illustrated children's magazine of preWar Japan, KODOMO NO KUNI was edited by artists and writers and displayed a wonderful spirit. As it happpened, Takei Takeo and others running the magazine made sure to create opportunities for left-wing friends to publish and earn a living with stories and illustrations. Japanese historians themselves sometimes refer to the 30s and war years as the "dark valley"... KODOMO NO KUNI was a beacon during those dark days. This issue has some wear, knicks to the covers but it is still quite wonderful, with the original flimsy tearaway that is sometimes still found. The tearaways often contains articles and advice for mothers. The colorful magazine pages were for the children... $325.00.
