Perhaps the most beautifully illustrated children's magazine of preWar Japan, KODOMO NO KUNI was edited by artists and writers and displayed a wonderful spirit. As it happpened, Takei Takeo and others running the magazine made sure to create opportunities for left-wing friends to publish and earn a living with stories and illustrations. Japanese historians themselves sometimes refer to the 30s and war years as the "dark valley"... KODOMO NO KUNI was a beacon during those dark days. This issue is intact though its covers are detached as the staples have pulled out, but is still quite wonderful. $285.00.
