The author's debut novel, a classic of Sixties American Lit. A semi-autobiographical chronicle, it's (per Wikipedia) "a sardonic account of mental illness, alcoholism, insulin shock therapy and electroconvulsive therapy, and the black hole of sports fandom, [with] its central preoccupation [being] a failure to measure up to the American dream." .
