Norwegian explorer and ethnographer, Carl Sofus Lumholtz (1851 - 1922), is best known for his meticulous field research and ethnographic publications on indigenous cultures of Australia and Mexico (Wikipedia). These volumes detail his exploration of Central Borneo (now Indonesia) in which he recorded his observations of the indigenous peoples including the Kayans, Kenyahs, Murungs, Penyahbongs, Saputans, the nomadic Punans and Bukits, Penihings, Oma-Sulings, Long-Glats, Katingans, Duhoi, and the Tamoans. He collected vocabularies from most of tribes visited. He also documented the tribes and wildlife photographically, with many images reproduced in these volumes. He travelled with a taxidermist and collected samples of local flora and fauna, and also collected ethnographic artifacts. Includes stories of head hunting as well as details about customs and cultural beliefs.
