By Hurley, Captain Frank
New York / London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1924. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. James Francis "Frank" Hurley (1885 - 1962) was an Australian photographer, filmmaker, and adventurer who participated in several expeditions to Antarctica and served as an official photographer during expeditions as well as during both world wars. His photographic style, which at times incorporates composite shots, staged scenes, and photographic manipulation, is memorable and was influential to later photographers. This book is based on Hurley's expedition to Papua New Guinea and Torres Strait. He filmed a documentary of the same title, which released a few years prior to the book in 1921. He went on to make several more documentaries of the region including "With the Headhunters in Papua" (1923) which was later unsuccessfully re-released in America as "The Lost Tribe." He made a few subsequent dramatic feature films (Wikipedia).

According to the foreword: "In 'Pearls and Savages' Captain Hurley has set down the vivid record of thse alluring New Guinea explorations. Its text is calculated to appeal to everyone of us for whom the story of modern adventure holds any measure of interest, while I venture to believe the rare beauty of its pictorial material, thanks to Hurley's superlative photography, stands unequalled."
