Limited Edition of 1250 copies, this being 181 numbered in red ink. Tall octavo (25 cm); [iv], [1-3], 4-536pp. Blue buckram with gilt lettering to spine. Boards rubbed and scuffed along edges and joints, with some scuffing and nudging to spine ends. Light discoloration to covers and joints with shelfwear overall. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Slight starting at bottom of first endsheet gutter, otherwise binding firm. Pages clean, with minor rippling to bottom of prelims.

Privately printed and distributed First Edition of Lawrence's sequel to The Rainbow, and his first novel after its predecessor's obscenity trial, seizure, burning, and banning. Seltzer distributed the novel to subscribers on November 9th, 1920, with 50 of the 1250 copies sold as sheets to Martin Secker. Secker issued these, also privately, in a limited, autographed edition in 1922, and published the first trade edition in June of 1921.
