Amherst, Massachusetts: John Adams Nash, 1855. Fair. Hinges cracked, binding worn with damage to extremities. Toning, dust soiling, short tears, leaves loose.. A bound set with twelve (12) issues of "The Farmer", a monthly journal devoted to "agriculture, horticulture, and rural economy" published in Amherst beginning in January 1855. We have been unable to locate any issues from 1856, and believe this set is a complete run of the short-lived periodical. The editor and publisher, John Adams Nash (1798-1877), envisioned the periodical as a resource for New England farmers offering tips on everything from fertilizer and plant seasonality to horse breeding. Also contains ads for farming equipment, job advertisements, and the occasional poem or riddle. There is even a "Youth's Department" to educate children and get them interested in agriculture. This bound set includes the following Issues: Vol. I, Nos. 1-12, with an inclusive index in the rear. Each spans approx. 16 pp., and is printed in three columns. This copy has pencil markings including strikeouts. Single vol. (12" by 9"), pp. 192, in original half leather and marbled sides, spine in compartments with dark lettering piece stamped in gold.
