By Julia Letheld Hahn
Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1935. Cards in very good to near-fine condition, with minor toning and dust soiling. Envelope in fair condition (worn with large tears). Cards only.. A complete set of "Orientation Picture Cards" to accompany "Everyday Friends", a 1935 children's book by Julia Letheld Hahn published by Houghton Mifflin. Hahn (1891-1942) collaborated with the publisher to make over a dozen stories for their “Child Development Readers” series. An educator would use the cards in tandem with the book, to reinforce different areas of learning that came up in the story (e.g. numbers, shapes, vocabulary). While reading aloud from the book, each card could be held up for the class to see. This set, which is complete, includes the following picture cards: “At the Passenger Station”; “Inside the Station”; “Three Trains”; “Animals in the Stockyard”; “The Freight Yard”; “Pets”; “The Roundhouse”; and “A Pretty Garden”. Each card measures approx. 11” by 14”, and they are housed in the original printed envelope. Offered together here with a mixed set of twenty-four (24) cards belonging to other sets in the Child Development Readers series.
