By [ANTHROPOLOGY][AMETICANA] SPIER, Leslie
Chicago, ILL: University of Chicago Press, 1933. First American Edition. Octavo. 21cm. Publisher's deep maroon cloth titled in gilt to spine. Lacking dustjacket. [xviii]; 433pp. Light wear to spine ends, clean and bright; internally clean and fresh, with bookplate of Nathaniel Tarn to front pastedown and Spier's signature to the front flyleaf, booksellers sticker to rear pastedown. A near fine copy.

From the library of Nathaniel Tarn, noted poet, translator, and anthropologist, laid in at the front is a small note in Tarn's hand on the verso of a Guidon Books bookmark from Scottsdale: "Leslie Spears copy from his own library. Signed by him. 3.14.81" Spier forged himself a reputation as one of the United States' most dedicated and energetic anthropologists, who made significant contribution to the study of the culture, environment, and history of Native Americans. Spiers' ethnographic methodology was heavy on extended fieldwork and close association, resulting in anthropological studies that don't possess the same detachment and rather barren academic tone of his contemporaries, without giving up any sense of professionalism or weight of knowledge. Scarce.
