By Dixon, Thomas [Jr.]
New York/London: D. Appleton and Company. Very Good. 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [moderately shelfworn, spine turned, light soiling and age-toning to edges of text block]. INSCRIBED to Hollywood director E.H. Griffith ("with best wishes from the author") and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. Novel about the "heroic" doings of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina during Reconstruction days, by the notoriously racist author of "The Clansman" (the source novel for D.W. Griffith's cinematically groundbreaking -- but also notoriously racist -- 1915 epic THE BIRTH OF A NATION). (The inscribee, Edward H. Griffith (no relation to D.W. Griffith), directed over sixty feature films between 1917 and 1946, with hardly a memorable title among them.) The copy bears a bit of additional Hollywood provenance in the form of the calling card of MGM writer/producer Carey Wilson, which is affixed to the front pastedown. Signed by Author .
