Full color illustrations - some are vibrantly hand colored of pitcher plants, but most are tinted lithographs. Bound in three quarter black leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt titles, author, and volume numbers to spines. Wear to edges of boards and corners. Heavy rubbing to boards. Exlibrary with stickers to spines and front pastedowns. Evidence of removed pockets to rear pastedowns. Hinges of Volume I have been reinforced with linen strips. Embossed library stamp to title pages and small library stamps to margins of maps. Occasional smudge marks and spots of soiling. Tears (mostly closed) and small losses to edges of a few pages including plates; although text and images are largely not affected. Minor dampstaining to margins of some plates. Marbled endpapers and full marbled edges. Appendices includes vocabulary lists with English translations from various tribes. A well-read reading copy of this fascinating expedition.
