Placard attributed to the 1970s anarchist printing house the Black Mountain Press. The placard reproduces a quote from an essay by progressive author and spokesperson Randolph Bourne (1886-1918). Shortly before his death in 1918, as the United States had just entered World War I, Bourne wrote "War is the health of the State. It automatically sets in motion throughout society those irresistible forces for uniformity, for passionate cooperation with the Government in coercing into obedience the minority groups and individuals which lack the larger herd sense.
