A travelogue of the author's voyage from America to Mauritus aboard the "Gem of the Ocean." Mauritius is a small island chain off the coast of Madagascar. Nicolas Pike (1818 - 1905) was an American consul and naturalist who werved in Port Louis, Mauritius. He painted and collected specimens which are now in Harvard University's collection, the Mauritius Herbarium, and the American Museum of Natural History (Wikipedia).

Bound in the original green cloth boards with oxidized gilt title to spine. Sunning to spine, wear / fraying to spine ends and corners, and minor wear to edges of boards. A few spots of soiling to boards. Handmade bookplate to front free endpaper. Offsettingn to endpapers. Minor dampstaining to corners of the first few pages and bottom edge of front board. 509 pages plus appendix and 4 pages of advertisements. TRA/062625.
