Hand Shadows [Pictorial Handkerchief]
- England: s.i., 1860
England: s.i., 1860. Very Good+. England? ca. 1860s. Pictorial handkerchief (21x25.5cm) borrowing images from the popular 1859 treatise by sculptor and shadow puppet enthusiast Henry Bursill. A few small soil spots, else Very Good to Near Fine.
Lovely souvenir handkerchief produced shortly after the publication of the popular 1859 guidebook to shadowgraphy, "Hand Shadows To Be Thrown Upon the Wall" by Henry Bursill. The kerchief reproduces the classic hand positions with a bunny the central figure, surrounded by a camel, a dog, a goose and a goat. The Prince of Wales' heraldic badge is also repeated on the left and right hand edge. Bursill's work went through several editions within a year of the original publication and was popular enough to warrant a follow-up volume of even more hand shadows.
