[MUSIC] [AFRICAN-AMERICAN] ROLAND HAYES PROGRAM, 1939
On October 5, 1939, Roland Hayes (1887-1977) performed at Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, PA. Hayes, a lyric tenor and composer, was one of the earliest classical performers to break the color barrier. By 1939 he was quite successful. ~~The concert was performed for the benefit of the Harriet Tubman Terrace House for Convalescent Negro Women and Girls. The Harriet Tubman Guild was formed in 1915 and active in their community. By 1934 the group had grown and incorporated as the Harriet Tubman Guild, Inc.
