Johnson was converted to Mormonism in 1832 and baptized at Kirtland, Ohio, in March 1835 at age 16. The path of his new faith led Johnson through the church's difficulties at Kirtland and the Mormon expulsions from western Missouri and western Illinois, then across the prairies to the Great Basin, and finally into the southern Arizona and Northern Mexico.
