New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. Very Good/Very Good. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. First Edition, stated, with I-C code to copyright. Octavo (21.1cm); publisher's clear glassine dust jacket; boards in blue cloth with darker blue spine and white lettering; [x],273pp. Expected light surface scuffs to glassine; boards rubbed at corners with light smudging to cloth; spine bumped at head and tail. Uniform toning to endpapers. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

Signed by the author without inscription on tipped-in limitation page at front. One of 1000 copies "autographed for presentation to friends of the author and the publisher in the book trade." Ahearn mentions an accompanying (here missing) review slip from the publisher explaining the book was issued early without a jacket so booksellers could get their orders in, with the 1000 copies appearing variously in glassine, advance review, and trade versions of the jacket, with Johnson noting a tissue jacket to add to the mix.

Basis for the 1955 film of the same name starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters. The book was a noted bestseller and finalist for the National Book Award, but the film was initially such a failure that director Charles Laughton never made another movie, its reassessment as an influential classic coming later as it was revived in repertory screenings and on television.
