8vo, full brown morocco elaborately toolrf in gilt, gilt edges, illustrated with 105 wood engravings, 267 pp. Spine top and bottom have pieces missing, but gilt title not affected, some edgewear, normal aging and browning; otherwise about very good. This is the expanded second edition, published one year after the first. This work represents the first book length description of the natural attractions in California. It's also the first work to describe the big trees of the Yosemite region in detail. Hutchings was editor and publisher of Hutchings' California Magazine founded in 1856, and the text and illustrations from that periodical, with some revisions, were used in ths work. This edition contains the illustration (page 184) of people getting seasick, including a man 'losing his lunch', which was excluded from some other editions.
