Basra, Iraq: H.M.S. Euphrates, 1943. Very Good. [Basra, Iraq]: H.M.S. Euphrates, 1943. Pictorial spirit-printed broadside menu (22.5x18cm), printed from manuscript. Moderate soil including a rather large thumb print (mince tarts can be messy), contemporary ownership Christmas sentiment in pencil on verso signed by three officers (Gregory, Simmons, and Griffiths). Very Good overall.

Christmas feed at the H.M.S. Euphrates, the naval shore establishment under the command of the Persian Gulf's Senior Naval Officer in Basra, Iraq, until the end of World War II. The men were fed throughout the day on a (literally) stupefying diet of egg, liver, kidney, and bacon for breakfast; turkey, pork stuffing, and roast potatoes for dinner; Xmas pudding with rum sauce for dessert; mince tarts for tea; and cold tongue and pork cheese, chutney and pickles for supper. Truly a spread designed to topple an empire.
