A complete set of Improved Game of Star Authors, including thirty-six (36) cards, a printed directions booklet, and the original chromolithographed illustrated box. Variations of this game were popular since the 1860s, and McLoughlin capitalized off its popularity by releasing two versions. This is version "A"; there is also a "B" deck with further authors to add to the game. The aim of the game is to collect a full sequence of cards (e.g. all of James Fenimore Cooper's sequence) from the other players. The following authors and their works are featured: Longfellow; Whittier; Tennyson; Emerson; Lowell; Harte; Fields; Aldrich; White; Warner; Howells; Holmes; Cooper; Clemens/Twain; Taylor; Bryant; Dickens; and Irving. It is interesting to see which authors make it into the deck and which do not (including women). Each card measures approx. 3.5" by 2.5". Booklet measures approx. 4.25" by 3" and is 8 pp. Box measures approx. 6.25" by 4.5" by 1
