First Edition of this extensive work detailing the travels and explorations of the author from the Mississippi to the Pacific that he describes in the preface as an effort to picture a fleeting phase of our national life. Albert Deane Richardson (1833 –1869) was a well-known American journalist, Union spy, and author. He wrote a book about his own experiences and a biography of Ulysses S. Grant. Richardson was shot on two occasions, the second time fatally, by a jealous husband of the woman Richardson was in love with [Wikipedia]. With 205 illustrations from photographs and original sources. There is also a two page map showing the route that Richardson took. With the very decorative title page showing a train, an Indian tribe, a farmer and more. Rebound using the original cloth covers with titlilng in gilt to spine and front cover. Covers are frayed, worn and bumped along the edges. Ownership signature on a free front endpage. There is an ink stamp from Co "K" 1301st Service Unit, New Cumberland, PA. on the first page of text and on page 39. Despite noted issues still a very good copy of the engrossing narrative.
