Vibrant tipped-in color illustrations, color illustrated endpapers, woodcuts in text. The authors were descended from a pioneer family in the European settlement of Australia, and inherited the Ivanhoe cattle station in Western Australia. This is one of several children's books the two collaborated on, which seems to draw inspiration from aboriginal folklore, and certainly from their surroundings (the characters are riding kangaroos in one of the illustrations, and a crocodile in another). Mary also wrote Kings in Grass Castles, its sequel Sons in the Saddle, and Keep Him My Country.
