Red cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine and the front cover. Ornamental gilt stamped patterns on the front cover. Top edge gilt. Deckled fore and bottom edges. Spine a touch faded and edges mildly rubbed. Front hinge cracked and binding a bit shaky. Bit of soiling along the gutter of page 88-89. Complete, with 18 full-page illustrations and an illustrated title page by Maxfield Parrish.

Before the age of 30, Maxfield Parrish had worked as an illustrator and poster designer for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal and the National Weekly. Parrish took full advantage of the new technologies in color reproduction and established himself as the master of fantasy and romance. He quickly became one of the best designers in what has been referred to as the "golden age of illustration.
