Tabloid format (42cm); half-tone pictorial self-wrappers, text printed in purple; [24]pp.; illus. throughout. Textblock uniformly toned, faint damp stain at bottom edge of upper cover, old mail fold, else Very Good and sound.

Inaugural issue of this Philadelphia-based underground tabloid which contains the earliest appearance of a Robert Crumb comic strip, originally pulled from his sketchbooks with no intention for publication. As Crumb tells it, "That guy who did the 'Yarrowstalks' picked up on those, thought they were really good...Then I did that issue of 'Yarrowstalks' [no. 3] that was all comics. That went over real good so that guy who did 'Yarrowstalks' suggested that I do a whole comic book and they would print it. I was boggled by that idea. I'd long given up the idea of doing comic books" [R. Crumb: Conversations (2004), p. 48]. In the end, however, Crumb's artwork was stolen and he had to self-publish "Zap 0" from xeroxes he had had the prescience to make.
