Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was a highly successful and prolific English novelist of the Victorian era, known for his 47 novels and other works. He is particularly celebrated for his Barsetshire novels and Palliser novels, which explore themes of Victorian society, politics, and social structures. This novel originally appeared in eleven monthly parts published from July 1869-May 1970. The title page states that the book has thirty illustrations by H. Woods, but according to the Sadleir bibliography (listing #33) there were actually 35 illustrations. Twelve are vignettes and twenty-three are full-page plates. Bound in a handsome full brown leather binding with gilt rulings to the covers and five gilt decorated bands to the spine with a black leather title label. The leather is rubbed along the edges of the cover and along the spine edges. Page edges and endpapers have a blue marbled design. Light foxing to front and rear endpapers. Gutters are cracked where book was opened flat but text block is firm. About very good condition. Measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches. ix + 481 pages. LIT/080725.
