Small chip on front fly bottom corner, neat ownership gift inscription on blank preliminary page, spine ends and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, topedge modestly soiled, else a very good or better copy. The tenth novel in the "Les Rougon-Macquart" series originally serialized between January and April 1882 in the periodical *Le Gaulois* before being published in book form by Charpentier in 1882. Scarce, *OCLC* locates only 1 copy.
