New York: New Directions. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1958, 1940). First Edition. Hardcover. [book has just a touch of wear to the extremities, slight bump to the upper rear corner; the jacket has a little wear at the corners, with a bit of damage at the upper right corner of the front panel]. Two works by Williams -- the first ("Orpheus") actually being a rewritten version of the second. "Battle of Angels" had actually been the first of Williams's plays to be produced, in 1940, but "failed spectacularly" (per T.W.) in its Boston tryout and wasn't staged in New York until 1974. The revised version fared somewhat better, enjoying a modest run of 68 performances on Broadway in 1957, after which it was adapted for the 1960 feature film THE FUGITIVE KIND, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani. .
