THE ILLUSTRATED HAGADA [HAGGADAH] : First Jerusalem Edition
- Jerusalem: Hamadpis Liphshitz, 1930
Jerusalem: Hamadpis Liphshitz, 1930. Very good.. Pre-WWII Jerusalem-published Haggadah with beautiful color-printed borders and illustrations by the Russian-Jewish avant garde artist. Russian-born El-hanani (transliterated here as Al-Hanani) is best known for his contributions to the architectural aesthetic of the modern state of Israel — for instance, renovating the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv in 1969 and designing the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem (the national Holocaust memorial). But he worked as a designer across multiple media, from stage design to typography. This production dates from before the war, during the era of the Mandate Palestine. Elhanani had emigrated to Jerusalem in 1922, bringing with him influences of the Russian avant-garde. 12'' x 9.5''. Original metallic cloth with faux leather grain, metal relief onlay to front board. Illustrated by Al-Hanani in color throughout. Text in Hebrew and English. 56, [10] pages. Ink owner inscription dated 1932 to front pastedown. Leaves toned and rather brittle, with a few short closed tears to gutter and cracks at some openings. Binding with some spotting and soil.
