By Truman Capote
New York: Random House, 1948. Very Good/Very Good. New York: Random House, 1948. First Edition. Octavo; publisher's cloth, dark topstain, in blue printed dust jacket with $2.75 price present. Dust jacket toned along spine and top margins, edgewear with slight chipping at spine crown, 2" split to top of front fold. Minor wear to board extremities, spine toned, binding sound. Ownership inscription, partially erased, of a Thelma A. Hodges to rear pastedown; ghost of paper clip to preliminaries, else unmarked. Signed by Truman Capote at front free endpaper month of publication "With Truman's love, Jan 29, 1948."

A Very Good copy of Capote's first book, which was a best seller and caused an immediate sensation, in no small part due to the controversy caused by the notorious Harold Halma author photograph on the rear jacket panel, which led to praise, parody, and outrage, all of which Capote reveled in. A young Andy Warhol was transfixed and began writing fan letters to Capote, while Random House blew up the photo and used it in their marketing. An auspicious and appropriate debut, remarkable with an early signature.
