Cleveland: The Cleveland Plain Dealer, 1929. Original typescript for the 1929 serialization of the 1928 mystery novel. Bound in before the manuscript is a 47-page typescript short mystery story titled "The Virgin Tower," ostensibly also written by Charles Lee Swem, with a few brief manuscript ink and pencil annotations on the first leaf.
Title page of "Werewolf" mentions "The Cleveland Plain Dealer" and a date of October 27, 1929. Swem's novel appears to have been serialized by the newspaper in 1929 as part of its Fiction and Feature section.
"Werewolf" was published in book format in 1928 by Doubleday Doran, and was author Swem's first and only literary effort.
A supernatural mystery, following a string of murders related to the Thistlestane family's unusual and bloody curse. Swem was a secretary to US President Woodrow Wilson (between 1913 and 1921)—a noted fan of mystery and crime fiction—for many years.
Brown wrappers with red quarter-cloth binding, with a typed label affixed to the front wrapper, noting titles "Were-Wolf" and "Der Jungfernthurm," along with credit for Swem. Typescript, rectos only. Approximately 250 pages. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads.
