Milano: Coi tipi di Giovanni Pirotta, 1827. In 16mo, (90 x 145 mm); 304 pages. Contemporary full leather with title stamped in gold on a label with elegant decorations in the compartments, gilded frame with floral motifs on the covers; binding a bit bowed edges of preliminary leaves show some soiling, otherwise very good.
First edition in Italian. The author conceived the work in a practical manner, intended for farmers, and for this reason renounced any scientific style. Her primary goal is to improve the lot of those who work the land and also that of housewives. In this passage, as she herself says: "I intended to be useful to mothers with families, to those who must think more specifically about the well-being of their homes, especially and perhaps more so by indicating ways to advance the science of rural and domestic economics." A fine copy printed on strong paper, well preserved.
Madame Gacon-Dufour (Paris 1753 – 1835), a champion of female education, was the author of the Revolution of a Mémoire pour le sexe féminin contre le sexe masculin (1787) in favor of women's education, in which she expressed her opinion against Sylvain Maréchal, and even denounced him, arguing that women could not be kept at home to care for their husbands and children. Based on her practical experience, experiments, and research, the author offers the reader in this treatise a series of recommendations regarding the cultivation, breeding, and processing of products, in order to obtain the maximum yield from the property.
ICCU (Italian Union Catalogue) cites 8 copies in Italian libraries, OCLC cites no copies in American libraries. Maria Paleari Henssler, Bibliografia Latino-Italiana di Gastronomia, (1998) I, pp. 317.
