In a small French West African village, Lucien Cordier (Philippe Noiret) is the only policeman. Abused by his superiors, insulted by local business leaders, fancying the lovely but married Rose (Isabelle Huppert), whose husband beats her in the street), and humiliated by his unfaithful wife (Stephane Audran)—Lucien will soon reach a breaking point.
