New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1996). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [no significant wear to book, but a bit of foxing on the edges (mostly the top) of the text block; the jacket has a tiny closed tear at the bottom of the front panel close to the spine, and an embossed "Hillcrest Country Club" medallion affixed at the top of the front flap]. SIGNED (no inscription) by the author on the front endpaper. "The incredible George Burns celebrates his one hundredth birthday with a priceless gift to his fans -- a collection of the stories that have made him one of America's national treasures" (or, perhaps, the best guy you could hope to be seated next to at a dinner party). It should be noted that although Mr. Burns wrote plenty of books as part of his late-career (post-OH, GOD!) renaissance, and was not a reluctant signer of same, the relatively short time that elapsed between his 100th birthday (January 20, 1996, the official publication date of this book) and his death (March 9, 1996) means that signed copies of this final one are commensurately scarce. The presence of the Hillcrest Country Club medallion on the dust jacket flap suggests that the club (of which he was a longtime member) may have been given a number of signed copies for some purpose, although that's only speculation on my part.
