New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Good. 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, but with some foxing and light dampstaining to the covers, age-toning to the fore-edge, and a miniscule bump to the lower front corner; internally quite clean]. Cain's classic about a determined woman who uses her cooking skills and her innate toughness to overcome the challenges of divorce and poverty (not to mention the world's most ungrateful daughter) to claw her way into the middle class. The basis for two very different film adaptations -- the great 1945 film noir with Joan Crawford (which departed considerably from the novel) and the 2011 HBO miniseries with Kate Winslet (which was almost slavishly faithful to the book). NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .
