The product of five years criss-crossing America, often hitchhiking and staying with all strata of society, from migrant farmers to the Rockefellers, "American Pictures" fascinated Europeans, shocked at the stark class divisions Holdt spotlighted. The book even drew the attention of the KGB who wanted to publish the book to discredit President Jimmy Carter's Human Rights campaign, though Holdt eventually thwarted the KGB's propagandistic plans.
