Hollywood CA: International Photographers, IATSE Local 659. Very Good+. 1938. (Vol. 10, No. 3). Hardcover. [modest wear and light external soiling; no stamps, labels or other markings]. (B&W photographs, ads, facsimiles) Tenth-anniversary issue of this technically-oriented trade journal, which understandably focuses on the latest advances and techniques in cinematography, but as the "Arts and Crafts" part of its subtitle suggests, also touches on other areas (e.g. sound recording). Much of this issue (68 pages, about twice the size of a typical issue of that time) is given over to advertising of both an ordinary and a congratulatory nature, but there's still plenty of interesting editorial content. Notably: "Photography Back on Top," a survey of the latest developments in camera technology, which (per the tagline) had not only improved image quality but also had freed the camera operation from some of the restrictions imposed by the demands of sound recording, thereby restoring the "camera to [its] prime spot as [the] story telling medium of [the[ industry"; an article about recent advances in the techniques of rear projection; a laudatory article about the enterprise shown by newsreel cameramen (made possible, of course, by ever-more-portable and flexible cameras); articles on the latest developments in sound recording, lighting, laboratory processing, make-up, and projection. The articles are illustrated primarily by photographs of the equipment under discussion, with occasional behind-the-scenes shots of technicians and filmmakers at work in the studios of the day. .
