By Twain, Mark [Clemens, Samuel Langhorne]
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1899. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 7x5x1. Early reprint, starting 'fortieth thousand' on copyright page (BAL 3451), hinges weakening, ink gift note on front endpaper. Exterior significantly more presentable than usual, with no discoloration of spine and only minimal wear to corners - a good candidate for recasing. 1899 Hard Cover. 712 pp. A travelogue written by Twain beginning in 1895, when we began a tour of the British Empire to present lectures as a means of paying off the sizable debt associated with a failed investment in a typesetting machine. The narrative includes indictments of racism, imperialism, and missionary zealotry. Several (rather farcical) fictional pieces are interwoven throughout.
