By Grove, Henry
Boston: Joshua Cushing, 1808. Very good. 12mo. 196 pp. Contemporary American tree-calf, smooth spine with gilt horizontal fillets, red lettering piece ("Grove"), two original binder's blanks at front and back, sprinkled edges (text FOXED as is true with all copies, for which see images; short marginal tear on pp. 5/6; lower fore-corner of upper cover scuffed and bumped, headcap chipped). Overall an attractive copy with an intriguing provenance. AN UNUSUALLY STERN EARLY AMERICAN BOOKPLATE: "JOSHUA GREEN'S PROPERTY ☛ RETURN THIS WITH CARE."

This individual may be Joshua Green (1764-1847), a graduate of Harvard and noted intellect, who became a judge and served in the State Legislature, residing in Wendell, Mass.

We have seen one other example of this bookplate, not in situ (as here) but extracted from a binding, at Mass. Historical Society. There may also be one at NLM (HMD Collection WZ 260 P867 1790) which as of this writing remains unconfirmed.
